1. Population
In the year 1927, population of Turkey was 13.648.270, and Samsun’s population was 268.868. Samsun was the 17th city of 63 cities in terms of population size. The area of the city is 9.083 km2 and it composes 1.2 % of Turkey. The number of people per km2 was 28 in 1927, but it increased to 133 in the year 2000. The average size of households in Samsun has been decreasing slowly. In the year 1955 the average size of households in Samsun was 6.2 people; but it decreased to 4.8 people in the year 2000.
1.1 Size of the population and rate of population increase
In the last 73 years population of Turkey increased approximately 5 times and Samsun’s population increased 4.6 times.
In the year 1927, Samsun had 1.9 % share in country population and in the year 2000 this rate decreased to 1.8 %. Between 1927-1960 periods the rate of population increase in Samsun was above the Turkey’s average; but between 1960 – 2000 periods this rate was below the Turkey’s average.
Urban population: In the year 1927, the share of urban population in Samsun was 21.3 % and it did not change very much until the year 1950. However; it increased constantly after 1950 and it reached to 52.5 % in the year 2000.
1.2. Place of Birth
In the year 1935, 82.2 % of the population in Samsun was composed of people who were born in Samsun. Between the years 1945 and 1970, this rate became 86 % and it tended to decrease after the year 1975. This rate was 83.7 % in 2000. The largest share is belonged to the Ordu among the people who were born outside Samsun. In the year 2000, 3.2 % of the population in Samsun was composed of people who were born in Ordu.
2. 2000 Population Census
According to 2000 population census, population of Samsun was 1.209.137 in total. 692.490 people in city centers and 516.647 people in villages. Population of Samsun city center was 435.487 and population of villages belonged to center was 56.720. 42 % of city population has been living in villages and 58 % of population has been living in city centers. Rate of population increase is 2 %, and population density is 126 person/km2.

According to the 2000 population census results, our city’s population has been increasing and immigration from villages to city has been coming true.
In the cities like Samsun where agriculture is quite important, immigration from villages to city centers and other cities is being experienced. We can mention deficiency due to the divided agricultural areas, unemployment that came with the crisis, difficulties in sustenance, researches for alternative resources and seasonal workings as reasons of immigration.

According to the population census made in the year 2000, counties can be lined up in terms of size of their population like the following: Center county, Bafra, Çarşamba, Vezirköprü, Terme, Havza, Tekkeköy, Alaçam, Kavak, 19 Mayıs, Salıpazarı, Ayvacık, Ladik, Asarcık and Yakakent.
Number of people who go out of Samsun is not as high as the number of people who come to Samsun. Generally, people go to İstanbul, Ankara, and İzmir from Samsun. Immigration is generally from rural areas towards other cities’ and counties’ centers. In terms of internal immigration, people come to Samsun from Amasya, Sinop, Ordu, Tokat, Trabzon, Rize, Giresun, Kastamonu and some other cities.
